Kelly Clarkson struggled to hold back tears after The Voice contestant Brayden Howell was eliminated, revealing that the young singer had earned a special place in her heart. The emotional moment came after Howell shared a deeply personal story about undergoing brain surgery just a year before stepping onto the national television stage.
During the NBC singing competition’s Monday, October 27, episode, 19-year-old Howell, a member of Team Riley, faced fellow contestant Cade Mower in the Battles round. The pair performed “Wondering Why” by the Red Clay Strays, delivering a performance that impressed the coaches before Riley Green ultimately chose Mower to advance.

Brayden Howell’s story leaves the coaches emotional
Green, 37, praised both singers after their performance, acknowledging the challenge of taking on a song by a distinctive and increasingly successful band.
“Fellas, that was great. I love that song. It’s a tough one to do. Red Clay Strays are unique and killing it right now for that reason,” he said.
When explaining his decision, Green highlighted Mower’s understanding of his own musical identity and strengths.
“Cade, one of the best things about you is that you know what you are and what you do well and what you want to do,” the country singer said.
Green also offered Howell words of encouragement, reflecting on how far the teenager had come at such a young age.
“Brayden, at 19 years old I was still building houses for a living. I didn’t even sing in the shower. I didn’t want anybody to hear me sing,” he recalled.
He went on to praise Howell’s stage presence and distinctive style, expressing confidence in the young artist’s future career.
Although Howell did not win the Battle, his story took an emotional turn when host Carson Daly invited him to share a few words before leaving the competition.

Brain surgery survivor reflects on his journey
Howell revealed that his appearance on The Voice carried special significance because of the health challenge he had faced only a year earlier.
“This has been a crazy experience. A year ago I was laying in the hospital, going through brain surgery, and here I am on The Voice stage,” he said.
He described the experience as a testament to his faith, adding, “This is just a testimony to God, what he can do for me.”
His words visibly moved Clarkson, 44, who wiped away tears as she shared her reaction to the young singer.
“There is something so special about Brayden to me. I don’t know, I hold a little special place in my heart,” she said.
The “Since U Been Gone” singer also made it clear that she would have liked to keep Howell in the competition if she had another opportunity to do so.
“If I had a steal, I would have stolen Brayden so hard and fast. I adore him,” Clarkson added.
Her emotional response underscored how deeply Howell’s journey had resonated with her, even as the competition required the coaches to make difficult decisions.
Brayden Howell thanks ‘The Voice’ for changing his life
Following the episode, Howell reflected on his elimination in an Instagram post, describing the end of his time on the show as the close of an important chapter.
“And with that… this chapter of my life comes to a close,” he wrote.
Looking back on the year leading up to his appearance, Howell admitted that he had once struggled to imagine himself reaching such a large audience. He also revealed that there had been moments when he considered giving up on a career in music.
“A year ago I would’ve never imagined being on national television. There were actually a few times that I considered giving up this career in music,” he shared.
However, his experience on the show gave him renewed motivation to continue pursuing his passion.
“This show gave me purpose and the will to continue doing music for the rest of my life,” he wrote, while expressing gratitude for the opportunity and the people he met during his time in California.
Howell also thanked Green for believing in him, his mentor Carly Pearce, and the other coaches for their kindness and encouragement throughout the competition.
He ended his message with a heartfelt tribute to the show that had helped shape his next chapter.
“I will always love you, @nbcthevoice, you changed my life forever,” he wrote.
Although Howell’s journey on The Voice has come to an end, his emotional farewell and Clarkson’s heartfelt reaction made his departure a memorable moment in the competition.
