Brand new thriller Unchosen, which was released on Netflix this week, seems to be proving a hit with viewers, as it currently sits in the top spot on the ‘Top 10 Series in the UK Today’ chart.

The show follows a rural religious cult called the Fellowship, where women are subservient to men. The arrival of a mysterious outsider kicks off a chain of events that leads to some shocking discoveries and the potential unravelling of their bizarre reality.

The cast includes Three Girls‘ Molly Windsor, Sex Education‘s Asa Butterfield, Hawkeye‘s Fra Free, 28 Days Later‘s Christopher Eccleston, and Happy Valley‘s Siobhan Finneran.

Critics seem to be less enamoured with the show than viewers are, as it only has a 57% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes from seven reviews.

Metro really enjoyed the series, writing: “Your next must-watch series has arrived – and you’re going to struggle not to binge it in one go”, while stating that Finneran “stole every scene” that she was in.

Unchosen could have been a strong drama”, wrote The Telegraph, noting how Windsor “really shines”, but the publication added that the show “heads into weak thriller territory, complete with a car chase and a silly kidnap”

The Irish Independent echoed those thoughts, writing that Unchosen “starts out promisingly enough” but “quickly spirals into daft, over-ripe melodrama before going full silly psycho-killer thriller in the later episodes”.

“It’s entertaining enough, undemanding fare, but you might wish you had chosen other ways to spend your four hours”, wrote The Guardian, which added that the script never rose above “workmanlike” and that the characters are more like “chess pieces” for the plot to move around as required.

Looking ahead, Finneran has been confirmed to be returning for the third season of Jimmy McGovern’s BAFTA-winning anthology series Time, while new cast members have also been announced.
