Glenn Close has reassured fans that she is feeling great after undergoing a complete hip replacement, explaining why she has recently been spotted walking with a cane.
The 79-year-old Hollywood star addressed the surgery in an Instagram video on Tuesday, October 20, after her appearance with a cane at a screening of La Bola Negra at New York City’s SVA Theater last Thursday sparked concern.
Close revealed that her doctors had advised her to undergo the procedure because her left hip was in particularly poor condition.
“I wanted to just hop on and thank you for all of your love, and to explain why I have a cane — I have a cane because I have had a complete hip replacement,” the Fatal Attraction actress said.
The eight-time Academy Award nominee explained that the cane was a temporary aid as she recovered and prepared for a demanding schedule of upcoming professional commitments.
“My whole thing right now is to keep myself in running order,” Close said, adding that she wanted to be ready to embrace whatever challenges came her way.
“So that I can really leap into whatever challenges come my way… so I’m hobbling around on a cane for now,” she continued.

Glenn Close Reassures Fans as She Prepares for Upcoming Events
Despite her recovery, Close is looking ahead to several high-profile appearances, including the London premiere of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and the New York premiere of the second season of All’s Fair.
The actress said she hoped to be fully present at her upcoming engagements, even if she needed to take things a little more slowly than usual.
“I hope to be fully present there, and maybe not running around going up mountains, but at least my old self,” she said.
Close also sought to reassure fans who had been worried about her health, emphasising that she was surrounded by loved ones and feeling positive about the future.
“So love to everyone — don’t worry, I’m feeling great — I have my wonderful, wonderful family around me,” she said.
“And I look forward to all the adventures coming, so love to everyone.”
She captioned the video, “A needed explanation. Love to all.”
During the clip, Close also joked about wearing a Frownies facial patch, which is designed to smooth the appearance of wrinkles, adding with a smile: “Frownies help.”
The Actress Continues to Celebrate Her Work

Close’s recovery comes during an active period in her career. She recently appeared in La Bola Negra, playing Isabelle Durand for directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. The filmmakers were honoured with the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival for their work on the film.
She is also set to receive an honorary Oscar on November 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom Ovation in Hollywood, recognising her contribution to the film industry.
With major appearances and new projects ahead, Close is focused on recovering while remaining involved in the work she loves.

Away from the spotlight, Close has also offered fans glimpses of her quieter life in Montana, where she moved in 2019.
In an Instagram video shared in August, the actress appeared relaxed at home, surrounded by the natural scenery.
“Hi everyone, I’m home,” she said. “I’m home, calming down.”
Close added that she was “wearing my mama’s shirt, letting the wind blow through my white hair” as she watched the sun set.
Reflecting on the peaceful summer evening, she said she felt “blessed”.
As she continues her recovery, Close’s reassuring message is that she is feeling well, supported by her family and looking forward to the adventures still to come.
