Latto isn’t letting online criticism slow her down. In fact, the rapper says negative comments often give her even more motivation to succeed, turning other people’s doubts into fuel for her creativity and ambition.
During her appearance on First We Feast’s Hot Ones, the 27-year-old artist opened up about her relationship with criticism, explaining why she actually enjoys having people doubt her.
The conversation began when host Sean Evans asked Latto about a lyric from her song “Business & Personal,” featured on her Big Mama album: “Y’all bitches gotta chill on the hate / ‘Cause it’s only puttin’ gas in the tank.”
Asked how much spite-driven success influences her creative process, Latto admitted that it plays a significant role in her mindset.
“I think that’s a lot of it for me,” she said. “I don’t know what it is in me that’s just like, ‘You think you’re gonna make me stop or slow down by saying what you saying?’”
The rapper made it clear that criticism has the opposite effect on her, adding: “On my Momma, that turns me up. Now I’ve got a point to prove.”
She continued with an even more direct explanation of why she welcomes the negativity: “I love when people hate on me ‘cause it really gives me a vendetta. Like, ‘Oh, now I have to prove you wrong.’”
Latto Doesn’t Back Down From Criticism of Her Cooking
Music isn’t the only area where Latto has faced online criticism. During the interview, she also addressed the reactions to her “Soul Food Sunday” cooking videos, particularly the comments about her gumbo.
Despite the negative feedback, the rapper stood firmly behind her cooking abilities.
“I don’t care what they say about my Soul Food Sunday, ‘cause baby, I can cook,” she said. “And if you ever get a chance to come try my food, you’ll know I can cook.”
She recalled that her gumbo had attracted particularly harsh comments, even though people who had actually tasted it reportedly praised the dish.
“They was talking about my gumbo real bad,” Latto said. “It was so good though. It was so good. Like, literally they was telling me it’s the best gumbo they’ve ever had. I don’t know.”
Her response reflected the same attitude she applies to her music career: online opinions aren’t enough to make her doubt herself.
Latto Continues to Build Her Music Career

Latto released her album Big Mama in May and is currently keeping busy on the road. She is supporting Doja Cat on the Tour Ma Vie World Tour, performing across North American arenas through December.
Between her new music, touring commitments, and social media cooking videos, the rapper continues to embrace the attention — whether it’s positive or negative.
For Latto, the message is simple: criticism isn’t going to make her step back. If anything, it gives her another reason to keep proving people wrong.
