Harry Styles paid a heartfelt tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne during a concert in New York City, marking two years since the singer’s death.

An emotional tribute at Madison Square Garden
During his Oct. 16 performance at Madison Square Garden, Styles, 32, introduced an unreleased acoustic song titled “What Is Enough,” which he said he had written about two years earlier.
Before performing the song, Styles reflected on the loss of a close friend and expressed gratitude for the people who had shaped his life.
“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” he told the audience, according to footage shared online. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”
He acknowledged that many people in the audience might have experienced similar grief, adding that his message was ultimately about “looking after each other.”
Styles then asked the crowd if he could perform a song he had written for his friend, setting the stage for a deeply personal moment.
The lyrics included poignant references to loss, remembrance and the difficulty of saying goodbye. In one verse, Styles sang about writing a letter only to burn it and watch it rise into the sky. Another passage referenced burying friends on a Wednesday night, evoking Payne’s funeral in November 2024.

Remembering their One Direction years
Styles and Payne were among the original members of One Direction, the hugely popular boy band formed in 2010. Alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, they became international stars before the group went on hiatus in 2016.
Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024, at age 31 after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, fellow musicians and his former bandmates.
The anniversary has continued to be an emotional milestone for those who knew and admired the singer.
Earlier in 2026, Styles spoke about the difficulty of processing Payne’s death during an appearance on The Zane Lowe Show. He explained that he had struggled with the public nature of his grief, particularly when so many people felt connected to the loss.
“It’s difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways,” Styles said, remembering Payne as someone with “the kindest heart” who simply wanted to be great.
Styles continues his world tour
The tribute took place during Styles’ Together, Together tour, supporting his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.
His Madison Square Garden residency is scheduled to continue through the end of October, including special “Harryween” performances on Oct. 30 and 31. The tour is then set to travel to Australia in November and December before expanding to stadium shows across the United States, Canada and Europe in 2027.
For fans, the performance of “What Is Enough” offered a rare glimpse into Styles’ private grief — and a moving reminder of the bond he shared with his former bandmate.
