ITV’s brand new spy thriller Secret Service is making its premiere on TV tonight, premiering at 9pm. Or if you don’t want to wait, you can stream all five episodes right now on ITVX.

Episode 2 airs on TV tomorrow night at the same time, while the final three episodes air on Sunday, next Monday and next Tuesday.

The show stars Gemma Arterton as senior MI6 officer Kate Henderson, who discovers intelligence that suggests a high-ranking British politician is working for Russia.

The official synopsis for the “gripping and timely thriller” reads: “As trust fractures within the corridors of power, Kate is drawn into an increasingly dangerous web of deceit, where shifting loyalties and personal stakes collide — and exposing the truth could cost her everything.

“As a brutal murder thrusts her team into the spotlight, Kate must navigate the dangerous world of espionage while trying to hold her family together and protect her reputation.”

As well as Arterton, the cast includes Happy Valley‘s Mark Stanley, Line of Duty‘s Rochenda Sandall, The Thick of It‘s Roger Allam, Life of Pi‘s Rafe Spall, and Doctor Who‘s Alex Kingston, to name just a few.

The series has been directed by The Theory of Everything‘s James Marsh, while the script had been adapted from the novel by Tom Bradby, the same Tom Bradby who also presents the ITV News at Ten.

At the time of writing, there’s only one critic review out there, published by Radio Times.

Interestingly, the review actually knocks the show for featuring too many real-life ITV presenters, calling it “the most distracting casting choice” and labelling it as blatant “cross-promotion”.

“Once real-life figures such as Robert Peston, Susanna Reid and Ed Balls begin grilling fictional politicians in cameo roles,” the review reads, “it becomes harder for seasoned actors like Alex Kingston and Roger Allam to leave much of an impression.”

Will other reviews agree? We’ll have to see once more are published.
