After years away from the stage, Aerosmith have made a spectacular return with an extraordinary gathering of rock legends — and the surprise appearances of Johnny Depp and Billy Idol were only part of the excitement.
The legendary Boston band reunited on October 29 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles for “California Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends”, their first full concert since stepping away from touring in 2023. The event brought together an impressive collection of artists to celebrate the band’s extraordinary musical legacy.
Before Aerosmith took the stage, audiences were treated to performances from some of rock music’s biggest names. Billy Idol and guitarist Steve Stevens were among the special guests, alongside Guns N’ Roses, The Black Crowes, Sammy Hagar, Heart, Eric Church and Godsmack frontman Sully Erna.
But the biggest surprises were still to come.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl joined Aerosmith on drums for the first five songs of their six-song set, helping the band deliver classics including “Toys in the Attic”, “Back in the Saddle”, “Sweet Emotion” and “Dream On”.
Then Johnny Depp unexpectedly appeared on guitar for “The Train Kept A-Rollin’”. The actor’s musical connection with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry through their supergroup Hollywood Vampires made the collaboration especially fitting.

However, perhaps the most emotional moment came during the closing number. Original Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer returned to perform alongside the band for “Walk This Way”, marking his first appearance with the group in more than six years.
Steven Tyler also took a moment to reflect on the band’s remarkable journey, celebrating more than 55 years together with his longtime bandmates.
The Hollywood Bowl reunion was a major moment for a group whose future had appeared uncertain following Tyler’s vocal injury and the cancellation of their farewell tour.
A second concert is scheduled for November 1, but whether these performances signal a larger comeback remains unclear. For now, Aerosmith have reminded audiences why their music continues to bring generations of rock lovers together.
