Lil Jon’s signature sunglasses have been part of his public image for years, but the story behind them traces back to a painful accident he experienced as a young child. Now, the Grammy-winning rapper is sharing how the injury affected his childhood — and helped shape his determination to prove people wrong.

A childhood accident that changed everything
In his upcoming memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, Lil Jon reveals that he accidentally injured his eye when he was around six years old.
Growing up in Atlanta, the musician, whose real name is Jonathan Smith, often saw his mother, Carrie, take insulin injections to manage her diabetes. One day, out of curiosity, he picked up one of her syringes and tried to see how air would feel against his eye. Instead, he accidentally stabbed himself in the eyeball.
The injury led to numerous medical appointments. Doctors eventually diagnosed him with a traumatic cataract caused by the needle, and he underwent several procedures, including a corneal transplant. During his recovery, he also had to wear a metal eye patch to school.
The teasing that made him more determined
The injury brought challenges beyond the medical procedures. At school, Lil Jon became a target for teasing because of his appearance.
“I definitely was teased in school,” he tells PEOPLE. “At that age if somebody’s different, they’re going to pick on you.”
The experience made him more reserved as a child. However, he eventually turned those difficult memories into motivation.
“I became shy,” he recalls. “But somehow I turned it into, ‘I want to always prove people wrong.’”
As an adult, Lil Jon developed a lazy eye linked to the childhood accident. Although he underwent another surgery to address the condition, he continues to wear sunglasses — a familiar part of his look that now carries a much more personal history.
Turning adversity into a career philosophy
Rather than allowing the injury and the criticism to define him, Lil Jon used those experiences to fuel his ambitions. He began learning the drums shortly before the accident and pursued music from an early age.
His determination also shaped how he built his career. In his memoir, he describes taking his own records to nightclubs across the country to get his music heard, finding ways to create opportunities instead of waiting for them to arrive.
“Whenever people have put me down,” he says, “I used that as fuel in my fire to excel.”
That mindset remains central to how he approaches obstacles today.
“I got to figure out how to pave my way no matter what. I got to prove people wrong,” Lil Jon says. “I’m the type, if an obstacle is put in front of me, I’m going to figure out how to go through it, over it, under it, around it.”
His memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, is scheduled for release on October 20, 2026, offering readers a closer look at the experiences behind the artist’s larger-than-life persona.
