Nineteen-year-old Alabama singer Joe Henley had never performed on stage before appearing on The Voice, but his latest performance has earned him a remarkable reaction from all four coaches.

The Voice introduces a major shake-up with its first-ever Cut Round

Season 30 has brought a significant change to the competition, with the introduction of a Cut Round that takes the place of the Knockout and Playoff stages used in previous seasons.

The new format begins with seven contestants on each coach’s team. By the end of Cut Week, however, only a handful will remain, in what the show describes as its “biggest elimination” in history. Each coach must select two artists to advance directly to the Live shows, leaving the other five to perform once more in the hope of securing a place in the Top 12.

The final decision will then go to viewers at home, who will have the chance to vote for one more contestant to join the Live shows and complete the Top 13.

Henley’s performance from Cut Week was released ahead of the episode, although his position in the competition has yet to be revealed.

Joe Henley earns a standing ovation with Keith Whitley cover

Late Friday, The Voice shared footage of Henley performing Keith Whitley’s country classic “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” His rendition immediately caught the coaches’ attention, with Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green visibly reacting in disbelief after hearing his opening line.

By the time the 19-year-old finished, all four coaches had risen to their feet, joined by the audience in a standing ovation. Clarkson was so impressed that she told Henley she would be “mind blown” if he failed to reach the finale.

His coach, Riley Green, also highlighted the singer’s natural ability, remarking that he would “be so rich and famous” if he possessed the same voice.

“This was so fun because you’re so naturally talented,” Riley said. “Keith Whitley does some really unique things, and to be able to go and do what he does is really difficult. You can somehow go do that and then do your own thing.”

Joe Henley secured a two-chair turn in the Blind Auditions

Henley’s journey on The Voice began with a performance of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore,” which prompted Riley Green and Kelly Clarkson to turn their chairs. Before taking the stage, the Alabama singer had already made it clear that he was a fan of Green and hoped to join his team. He ultimately got his wish, choosing the country star over Clarkson.

Clarkson was convinced of Henley’s potential from the very beginning, even suggesting that he had what it took to win the entire season. His performances in the weeks that followed have continued to give weight to her prediction.

During the Battle Rounds, Henley faced fellow Team Riley contestant Kenna Elpers in a duet of “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the collaboration between Green and Ella Langley. Henley came out on top, earning his place in the next stage of the competition.

A few weeks later, he returned to the stage for Cut Week, delivering the impressive Keith Whitley cover that earned a standing ovation from all four coaches.

Viewers will find out whether Henley advances to the Live shows during Monday night’s episode of The Voice, airing November 2 on NBC.
