Hugh Jackman is mourning the loss of his longtime friend and X-Men co-star Sir Patrick Stewart, sharing an emotional tribute after the legendary actor died at the age of 86.
Stewart passed away at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2026. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that he had been living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He spent his final moments surrounded by family and friends.
Jackman, who played Wolverine opposite Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier across several X-Men films, paid tribute to the actor in a touching Instagram post on October 29.
“We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today,” Jackman wrote. He described Stewart as a tremendous friend and a man from whom he had learned so much, adding that he would miss him “all of my days.”
The tribute included photographs capturing their years working together, bringing back memories of one particularly emotional moment during the promotion of Logan in 2017.
At the film’s Berlin premiere, the two actors sat beside each other as the credits rolled. Stewart later recalled that Jackman took his hand, and the pair found themselves overcome with emotion. After years of portraying the same characters, the film marked a deeply meaningful chapter in their shared journey.

Their connection went far beyond the screen. Jackman and Stewart first appeared together in 2000’s X-Men, beginning a partnership that continued through several instalments of the franchise. Their performances as Wolverine and Professor X became an important part of the series’ identity.
Stewart was also celebrated for his extraordinary career beyond the superhero films. He became internationally famous as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, while his decades of Shakespearean stage work earned him widespread respect.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world, with former colleagues remembering not only his remarkable talent but also his warmth, generosity and influence on those around him.
For Jackman, the loss is deeply personal. His tribute reflects a friendship shaped by years of shared work, mutual respect and unforgettable moments — including a final chapter in Logan that clearly meant so much to them both.
